Departments, programs and fields of study of the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology are included:

 

u IV.1 Department of Agricultural Machinery

The department of agricultural machinery commenced its activity in 1963 as agricultural machinery mechanics. The departments of agricultural machinery mechanics and irrigation were then merged to form the major "Rural engineering" in 1969. In 1971 the two were re-separated where the agricultural machinery followed its new activities with an intake of 25 students. The department in its 5200 m2 infrastructure presently offers education at the three levels of B.E., M.Sc. and Ph.D. The post graduate degrees are offered under the title of "Mechanic of Bio systems Engineering and Agricultural Mechanization".

Food machinery engineering is a multidisciplinary field of sciences to design, develop, implement, manage, monitor, control, optimize, and repair the food and drinks processing, handling, packaging, and storage machineries and plants by employing the physical, chemical, and biological sciences, mathematics, engineering fundamentals, and engineering design. Prospective major employers for food machinery engineers include companies involved in food and drinks equipment's design and development, processing company, packaging and storage units, and ingredient production plants.


u IV.2 Department of Food Science and Technology

Established on 1961, as the first academic center to fulfill country's requirements on the education of expert engineers in the field of food science and technology, the department started to carry out its missions. Food Engineers are dedicated to be employed as:

-       Quality control managers in Food plants

-       Production managers in Food plants

-       R&D managers in Food organizations

-       Auditing experts in food administrations

-       Strategic Planning and production optimization in food plants

-       Supervisors in projects and machine design

-       Technical expert in food processing plants

Considerable evolution has been observed in the department life compiling with market changes in the field. From pure food preservation technology to Hi-Tec Bio and nanotechnology in food technology proves department's ambitious to develop following the world knowledge evolution. Dairy, Bakery, Sugar, canning and fermentation pilot plant beside to food chemistry and microbiology lab were main hard wares of the department in the early stages. Actually three levels of education namely: B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. are offered in the field together with related research labs that make the following majors, specializations and programs to be presented:

In B. Sc. program: Food Science and Engineering major. In M. Sc. program: Food Science and Engineering major with four specializations of Food Engineering, Food Science, Food Technology, and Food Biotechnology.

In Ph.D. program: Food Science and Engineering major with four specializations of Food Engineering, Food Science, Food Technology, and Food Biotechnology. M.Sc. & Ph.D. students are formed in four different specializations. In Food Science specialization different aspects of food science including  Food chemistry, Food Microbiology and Food Quality control are studied and the graduates are prepared to be employed as researcher teachers, R&D managers etc. in related areas. Graduated students of Food Biotechnology are able to handle the bioprocesses and to use the microorganisms to convert raw materials and by products to high added value food, nutraceuticals and food additives. Different aspects of engineering including plant design, process design, process optimization and modeling of various phenomena in food products and processes are main target in this specialization. Product and process design in different categories of food, innovations in food products and by products are the principal concerns in the specialization of food technology.


u IV.3 Department of Irrigation and Reclamation Engineering

The Irrigation and Reclamation Engineering Department of the University of Tehran was established in 1957, at the former Faculty of Agriculture. The department provides B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in the fields of Irrigation and Drainage, Water Structures, and Water Resources Engineering. Also, it provides M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Agricultural Meteorology. Highly qualified professional engineers have graduated during the last decades at this department.

Moreover, the Irrigation and Reclamation Engineering Department has been qualified as the national scientific "Center of Excellence for Evaluation and Rehabilitation of Irrigation and Drainage Networks". In addition to the official B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, The Irrigation and Reclamation Engineering Department offers short courses and workshops for local public and private sector. The department has continuously been engaged in applied research projects. The first ever physical model studied in Iran, belonged to VOSHMGIR dam, was constructed in this department in the late 1950s.

Hydraulic research laboratory

This research laboratory with an area of about 1000 square meters includes large scale hydraulic facilities such as many rectangular and compound section tilting flumes, ground water and drainage setups. Some of the existing facilities are unique nationwide.

Agricultural Meteorology research Station

One of the oldest meteorological stations in Iran is located on the Irrigation and Reclamation Engineering Department research farm station. In addition, there are modern meteorological and climatology labs which have been used for teaching and research purposes.

Research Farm

A two-hectare research farm within the large agriculture farm was specially considered for irrigation and drainage research. The research farm has been used for large scale field experiments, evaluation of irrigation systems and determination of water consumption use for different crops. Also, a weighing, 4 m*4 m lysimeter, was installed in this specified research farm.

 

u IV.4 Department of Soil Science

The Department of Soil Science commenced its educational programs from 1954 offering courses in Soil Chemistry and General Soils. In 1957, the first undergraduate program in soil sciences was started. Since then, there has been a tremendous growth and expansion in the department.  The M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs of soil science were established at the Department of soil science of University of Tehran for the first time in Islamic Republic of Iran on 1964 and 1990 accordingly. At present soil science department have developed its programs in five fields of professions at graduate courses including:

1. Soil Science

2. Soil chemistry, Fertility & Plant Nutrition

3. Soil Biology & Biotechnology

4. Soil Genesis, Classification & Land Evaluation

5. Soil Physics & Conservation

This department acts as the state Scientific Center of Excellence for Soil Quality Improvement towards a balanced plant nutrition.
